Questions for BookclubEvery Breath

To Bookclub devotees:  There are no internet questions to be found for Every Breath, so I created my own. I live 10 minutes from Sunset Beach and walk to Kindred Spirit almost every week.
I help troubled couples and those dealing with healing from infidelity through Private Marriage Retreats at the North Carolina coast.    www.anniversarykeeper/gallery.com

Discussion Questions for Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks

1. How did you feel about Tru’s background? How did you feel about his childhood losses?
2. Did you feel empathetic about Hope’s dilemma with her boyfriend, Josh? Why do you believe that time marches on without a commitment from long-term relationships?
3. Did you have an emotional moment when Tru and Hope opened Kindred Spirit and sat down and read the letter from Joe to his deceased wife?
4. If you have been to Kindred Spirit on Bird Island, have you ever had that kind of moment when reading some of the notes?
5. Why do you believe these two people where attracted to each other, even though they lived in different worlds and continents?
6. How did Hope begin to experience her own self awareness and her personal energy after her walk on the beach with Tru?
7. Tru’s father told his story of being in love with Tru’s mother and what had occurred with “The Colonel”. At what point were you able to grasp the gravity of the situation? What did you think about Tru’s father’s decision to leave? Why did his father want or need Tru’s forgiveness?
8. In the scene between Tru and Hope after her friend’s wedding, Hope struggled to tell Tru her reasons for making a difficult choice? What were her reasons? Did they resonate for you?
9. After her divorce from Josh, Hope was able to think about relationships in a new way. With it brought questions. What do you think about some of these questions? “Why does love always seem to require sacrifice?” “Was sacrifice a necessary component of love?” “Was the former proof of the latter, and visa versa?”
10. Later when searching for Tru and turning up nothing, Hope believed that “fate” conspired to keep them apart? Do you think that in spite of setbacks, there was a bigger plan at work, one not fathomable?”
11. What did you feel at that moment that Tru told Hope about his dream; about the couple at the coffee shop in South Africa? What did you think and feel at that moment when you read about Sharon and Bill, who had a house at Sunset Beach, having a conversation with Tru in a coffee shop in South Africa? Would you consider it to be coincidence or miracle?
12. How did you feel about the reunion between Tru and Hope at Kindred Spirit? Did it seem unfathomable ?
13. When Hope told Tru about her battle with ALS, what was her take on life and her future with Tru at that point?
14. Hope needed to ask Tru for forgiveness for breaking his heart by choosing to be with Josh. Tru said, “You ‘ve always had it”…”Grief is always the price we pay for love?” Do you think this is a true statement?
15. How did drawing, art, and written letters add to the story? Are you drawn to either or both of these ways of expressing your emotions and thoughts?
16. Did you like the way Nicholas Sparks wrote himself into the story?
